Short chronicle of the Sports Centre Kienbaum

around the year 1400
the name „Kynbom“ appears in old chronicles and also the landmark of the village: the gnarled „Kynbom“

1400 1600
development into a little village with 120 people who work in the field and as beekeepers; it was destroyed twice by fires but always rebuilt

at the beginning of the 20th century
the „Liebenberg-mill“ turns into a sawmill but soon thereafter it is closed down after that the poor people of the village live in these buildings

during WW I and II
utilization of the rooms as an ammunition factory for building grenades

expropriation of the owner and dismantling of the machines

until 1948
unoccupied and then decision to build a recreation park

17th Sep 1949
opening of the recreation park mainly for artists, scientists and state officials

in 1951
on the occasion of the world games, stayed the first domestic and foreign sports delegations in Kienbaum

changing of the function as a recreation park into the sports and training centre Kienbaum

development into a competitive sports school of the German gymnastics and sports union (DTSB) and the GDR

in the 60s
start of an extensive building program with the building of sports facilities and supply utilities

opening of the pressurized cabin to simulate training conditions in heights up to 4000m

completion of a second, separate complex with accommodations, sports facilities and supply utilities Kienbaum II

until 1990
sports and training operation for competitive sports. A lot of the top athletes of the GDR in sports like track-and-field, canoe, gymnastics, handball, volleyball and cycling, stayed in Kienbaum in preparation for Olympic Games, World Games, European Championships etc.

stoppage of training operation under the administration of the German gymnastics and sports union (DTSB) and the GDR

1st half of 1991
maintenance of sports and training operation in cooperation with the German sports union (DSB) ot FRG and the German gymnastics and sports union (DTSB) in liquidation of GDR

14th Jun 1991 
foundation of the „Trägerverein Sportzentrum Kienbau e.V.“
takeover of 40 employees and continuation of the sports and training operation for competitive sports

from 01st Jan 1997
definition as Federal performance centre (Bundesleistungszentrum (BLZ)) for a lot of sports, especially for:

  • track-and field
  • table tennis
  • canoe
  • triathlon
  • gymnastics
  • handicapped sports
  • speed skating
  • volleyball
  • bob and sleight sports
  • archery

since 1997

  • the BLZ Kienbaum is becoming more and more an integrated part in planning and realization of training measures of top sports clubs.

  • new building of three field indoor facility
  • redevelopment of accommodation Kienbaum II
  • new building of body building facilities
  • redevelopment of gymnasium
  • new building of canoe centre and boat house
  • new building of the Finnish Sauna
